Why Should I Join?
The healthcare climate is anything but friendly to most Pennsylvania surgeons today with continual reimbursement cuts and skyrocketing medical liability insurance premiums. Because we recognize the financial impact that these factors have on surgeons, KC/ACS membership is affordable and offers many useful member benefits which are continually evolving to meet your needs.
Background
The Keystone Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, which was founded in 2003, is the result of a merger between the Central and Eastern Pennsylvania Chapters. The Chapters recognized that a merger would allow them to streamline their operations and better utilize limited staff and volunteer resources. The Keystone Chapter, which represents 42 counties in eastern and central Pennsylvania, is able to offer more exclusive member benefits, develop excellent continuing education programs, provide more frequent and useful communications on issues of concern and interest to the surgical profession, and overall, serve as a more effective voice for surgeons.
Our Mission
The mission of the Keystone Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (KC/ACS) is to provide a regional voice for surgeons in all specialties, be an advocate for its members and the patients they serve, provide educational opportunities for its members, and to encourage the highest standards of ethical surgical practice.
Member Communications
Broadcast fax and emailThese means of communication allow us to provide members timely information on issues effecting the surgical profession and on upcoming events without adherence to publication deadlines and production schedules.
Annual Scientific Meeting
The Annual Scientific Meeting boasts of a valuable educational experience complete with some of the finest surgical speakers in Pennsylvania and across the country, a diverse array of topics, and a convenient location. As a member of the Chapter, you can attend this excellent educational event at a greatly reduced registration rate.
Capitol Hill Chapter Visits
KC/ACS members are selected to attend a day and a half session in Washington D.C. with the American College of Surgeons to learn firsthand about the legislative process. On the day they arrive, attendees are briefed on the major issues currently being considered on Capitol Hill that affect surgical practice. The following day, attendees take part in a role playing exercise and then begin their congressional visits with U.S. representatives and their staffs. This proves to be a very informative opportunity for members to not only learn about the legislative process but also become involved in making a difference in the political process.
Legislative Advocacy
The Chapter is an excellent and appropriate vehicle to make the concerns of surgeons from eastern and central PA heard not only at ACS headquarters in Chicago, but also in Harrisburg and Washington. Through its strong ties with the American College of Surgeons and the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Chapter monitors and supports action on the legislative and regulatory issues which affect our patients and our profession.
Chapter Website
Our chapter website, www.keystonesurgeons.org, includes up-to-date information on the Chapter's upcoming events, legislative and regulatory issues, and topics relevant to the surgical profession. The website will also include a “Find a Surgeon” searchable directory for the public to access that promotes the use of surgical services provided by Keystone Chapter members. In addition, plans are underway to have a Job Bank for career opportunity listings. The website is in its infancy and is continually evolving, so visit us today and give us your input.
